Microsoft is richer. I think they would win. I can just imagine a hand-to-hand brawl between Bill Gates and... whoever runs Mac.

Microsoft has a well-earned Monopoly, and will keep it for a long time, despite what the more "learned" computer users say
Yes well there's no doubt that Microsoft has a monopoly at the moment, I don't know about well earned, Bill Gates was the first to use the idea and somehow he got away with it. In most commercial situations there are several companies competing for business which keeps the prices down and helps keep things fair for consumers.
Somehow, Microsoft has been allowed to set up a business which obviously is designed to make it very difficult for the competition. If that's not illegal it should be.

It is actually illegal: the U.S gov't made special laws so that he couldn't progess any further. But then, when you own about a quater of a trillion, you get special privlivges where you can even pee on the presidernt and get away with it.
It's called something like "veto power" from certain bribable people .. . . .
Ahhh . . . the states and your crazy omega corparations!
did you knwop they litterally trucked 40 billion out of one poor middle-eastern country one night, leaving it's economy with a few million to it's name?
Didn;t evn make the news , due to news may have to sell, but bribes can buy it . . .
geez, i'm ranting.
I might open another thread oin "The Corpration" . . ..

might be a good idea ffreakums..;)
I do beleive that Mr Gates has been in trouble over monopolising with the US equivalent of the Monopolies and mergers commission (thats what it used to be called here in the UK).
As for the MAc vs Microsoft, I have only used a Mac before on a few occasions and found them to be a pain in the posterior! Each to their own i guess although i would personaly say that the mac seems aimed at the more geeky user than Ms..

Freakums, you can't state claims that the US stole 40 billion dollars from some random country and not provide any facts to back up such an outrageous claim. As a loyal patriot, I am deeply offended by that comment, and think it's ridiculous you would post such a thing.
Anyway, yes Mick, there are laws against monopolies and trusts, but Gates has managed to keep Microsoft well within the boundaries and actually won a Supreme Court case several years ago allowing Microsoft to stay.

think we are gettign way off topic here but i'd just like to point out to mick that no matter what you think Microsoft Windows revolutionized home computing...you cannot take the credit away from him.

Oh yes you are right about that, he did lead the way and made a huge difference in the computer industry. If he didn't do it, someone else would have eventually as that was about the time that computers became capable of running such software. I just don't like the way he tried to get a monopoly on computers, which he essentially did.
We may have got a different style of GUI (Graphic User Interface) if someone else had designed it but essentially it would have been roughly the same. We might have even got a GUI that doesn't crash, one that is 100% stable. Wouldn't that be nice?

I work with both, and they each have their good and bad points.

I agree..no one computer system is totally flawless..I deal with that all the time myself

No system is without fault, just like no person, except Jesus, is without fault.

I think we digress. I think the original topic was supposed to be trying to figure out if macintosh or microsoft is better. What's your take on that? If I had to pick I would prolly pick microsoft. But only because I get better performance out them.

I have had different MS operating systems 95 and 98 were my 1st I dealt with
Both froze up badly ..then ME 4 yrs ago..and it too was problemed..icons would mess up or flat out vanish..then I went to XP..only 1 I've been content with..but the hardware issues were a pain.. 5 yrs of seeing different things make ya learn quick
JsWoman
06-15-2005, 04:17 PM
Yeah... I see your point there... But, stilll.. Macs don't run that great, either, since they usually work off of older proccesses.
yarnellcg17

never really dealt with that system.. did see em long time back 2 or so decades back..but never had any desire to wanna mess with one

My boss only works on macs, and they are constantly freezing up... Thats why I would rather work with Windows.

Longhorn is the next soon to be released prodigy of Microsoft... I really haven't seen to much of it to form any opinion into whether I'd want it or not..

No offense to anyone intended, but what the heck is longhorn, besides a steak house?
yarnellcg17
06-16-2005, 01:16 PM
From what I have read..Longhorn is a code name for a new operating system..Once Longhorn is completed... it will have a new name for market..
JsWoman
06-16-2005, 01:20 PM
Wonder what name they will come up with for that for commercial use. Longhorn is a good codename... Was that for MS or Mac?
yarnellcg17
06-16-2005, 01:31 PM
Longhorn is a Microsoft product..they've been working on it since 2003
JsWoman
06-16-2005, 01:32 PM
OK, thanks for letting me know that.
I think Longhorn is Windows in 3D, so instead of having the usual 2D flat desktop everything will be 3 dimensional instead. I have seen a couple of articles on it but it didn't look very exciting to me. I think they may be just getting desparate to get more customers so they have to dress up windows and make it look pretty.
It would be nice if they would concentrate on designing a stable, reliable operating system that works properly instead.
yarnellcg17
06-16-2005, 09:19 PM
I believe you're right on the 3D..as far as how that will appear..is anyones guess..thinking in what type of video card and or monitor ya have...
But marketing and gaining more consumers with enhancements isn't a solution..like ya said..we need stability and reliability.. no matter if is mac or windows..
As far as video cards and monitors go, I don't think there would be any change, mainly just how the graphics is displayed. When I say it will be 3D, it is really a fake 3D, simulated on a flat 2D screen but that would be very easy to achieve considering the number of "3D" games around. For a 3D windows it would require a bit more processing power than the 2D OS but with the speed of systems these days it won't be a problem, only on older systems.
Which then means that people will need to upgrade their computers if they have a old one and want the new system, so Microsoft sells more comps, makes more money and so it goes on :p
As I said though, I did read about it somewhere on the net, I will have a look and see if I can find it again
yarnellcg17

Ok on the extra reading.. I have a 500Mhz processor..whether it would handle Longhorn or not would be unknown..but today you wouldn't find new PC with an ancient processor as mine.. 5 and a 1/2 yrs ago when I got my PC..that was state of the art..
I have my doubts about a 500Mhz comp running Longhorn, but there is no need to upgrade if you're happy with what you have. As for state of the art, well computer technology advances so quickly that the latest state of the art machines are outdated in less than 1 year so it's pretty hard to keep up. Really you just need to find what suits you best and stick with that.

The system I'm working on, right now, is a windows ME with a tower that is over 5 years old. So slow compared with the tower I had before, that had windows XP, before it crashed because it wasn't set up right. *sigh*

This is for Arkacia should she see this thread sometime soon..I noticed in one of her threads that she had to put XP back on and she'd get the blue screen..
Solution for that:
If you are doing the Upgrade
F5 or F7 will disable your bios and allow for the installation to go thru..
have to hit it it just right..at the right time :D

It wasn't that easy unfortunetly. I pressed every button on the keyboard at the time, nothing was working.
The problem we found out later was my comper has but doesn't have a floppy disk drive. The computer was in a tizzy because it couldn't detect the thing and I didn't realise that while I can see the slot on the outside of the comp, it isn't connected on the inside.
As soon as my kid brother saw what was happening and disabled the thing, everythings been running fine. I know what to do next time this happens :D.

I see...very very difficult with no floppy..is the floppy bad? When I got XP in 2002..I thought to myself..ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh a new deal and smooth sailing...er so I thought..I was blue screened to the point of becoming blue to the face..I the put it away for 4 mo's and tried again.. it took off 1st try after hitting the F7 key..lol
Arkacia
06-21-2005, 01:03 AM
No the floppy's not bad, its never been used. Thats the way the comp was built. I guess they just put the thing in to fill the slot in front of the computer but we can't find anywhere to plug it in inside. A bummer for me because I'd use it if I had it working.

Don't feel bad..I have 2 computers that has missing items..cdrom cable cannot connect to the motherboard and 1 that has a missing power switch..til I get that switch..I can't even fire it up.. kinda makes you wonder who is behind it all when you get flaws like these
