As requested by Freakums, I think this would be a good time to start up a conversation on new games vs. old games. I mean, of course, today's games are much more powerful and the graphics are mind blowing, but do they really beat the charm of the classic Super Mario Brothers? Any opinions? Which do you guys like better and why?

modern PS2 etc.
graphics, gameplay and realism are ever increasing. yer you have the odd old game that is a classic Space impact, Sensible Soccer etc. but we have classics being made atm Timespliters, PES, CS, Farcry etc these game will go down in history but i do hope the older 1's SI and sensi soccer get remembered too.
I like old and new games but if I had to make a choice I would say new games because they are far more powerful with graphics and options in games. Older games have good gameplay and some are very addictive. Also there were a few older games that didn't lose their appeal after a while as many games do these days.
Old games go way back before sensible soccer though, I would define a classic as space invaders, asteroids, pacman, joust, etc.... but I grew up with these games which I guess many members here didn't. Joust was one of my favourites back then which is why I get good scores here:p

Personally, although I think today's games are good... I would probably rather play a game like Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario RPG, along with numerous others for my NES and SNES (forgot the Donkey Kong Country series, or at least one and two) than Metroid Prime 2... Then again, it's sort of comparing an apple and an orange... so all my poll has done is confuse me farther :p

There are great games for all systems, but I particularly like the adventure and RPG's made for the super nintendo and playstation such as final fantasy games, super Metroid, various Mario games, and of course, zelda: a link to the past

yes.... wow, classic games are edging everything else right now by the slimmest of margins... one. Yeah, I was playing Paper Mario 2 for the Cube yesterday, and it is all right, with creative and inventive and graphics, but I think it's just a childish take on a classic with too little hype: Super Mario RPG. I think that is Mario's greatest game without a doubt, but it was overshadowed by the simultaineous release of the N64 and Super Mario 64. Even though 64 was a good game in 3D, I like RPG better. Something I like is where you control your own destiny to a degree in the game. I think games on the SNES in general covered that well. For example, like in Super Mario RPG, you can choose your characters/dig deep for hidden treasures (items, weapons), on 64 even though you have this huge world to explore, you still have to follow everyone else's path in the long run: get a certain star... ok, i'm done, lol

Modern games are great, but my favorites will forever belong to Play Station...Final Fantasy VII and VIII are unbelievable...but Knights of the Old Republic 2 for XBox is also pretty freaking sweet.

I need to play the final fantasy games... actually haven't played any XBox games either with the exception of ten minutes of Halo 2.

you alrerayd know my opinion on all of this!
i do liek games where you c0ontrol your destiny a biut, just the right amount of slight nudges and side qwuests, and alternative endings you can get make the game replayable. alternative endigns don;t have to be too much alternate either. FFIII, for example, if you just didn;lt beast it with enough characters at the final palace, you could get all your characters killed! or n0one, or a combination! It was rather fun findign out all those combos . . . . for example, iof you ahve lokce and clee on the same team, those two will survive no matter waht . . . they may cruhed or trapped whern the palace collapses, but,. they still run to catach the aircraft .. ..
the FF's, in my opinion, had great stoiry in the latter ones, and awe strijking gameplay in the earliers, i prefer ht e gameplay, because the story sutff, i was never much inot hat, y'know? playn thr game once, the storys over. bu gmaeplay goes beyond the first time. thats why i love dclassics. you never see any mopdern games makign any really good arcade games any more, do you? have you yet heard of an arcade as well known as pac man? as well [palyed space invadersd? that earned as many quaters aseven that simple jukebox in many an ice creeam store way back when and even, in some, today?
funnyy .. . i thought i';d alreayd posted here . . . welll,i'll stop here for tongith, anyways.my spellign is gettign too bad . . . wrist fatigue.

The SNES was THE system. It had the best games of almost any genre, and had the better selection of RPGs (minus FFVII of course). Also Super Metroid is one of those games that really makes something of a system. Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger... Oh god Chrono Trigger! :D I mean come on! :D The most sought after RPG I can think of! Those were the days... those were the days...

I like new games probaly best overall. However, there are some brilliant old games for systems like amstrad, spectrum etc. The older games had to be more addictive and have great gameplay as the graphics could not justify the makers imagination. That said, some of the modern games are terrible. Even the graphics are poor. The publishers know that some unknowing people will still buy them.
I love pacman. It is over 20 years old but one of the most addictive games you will ever play. I play a lot of abandonware games and they are great.
Click and point adventure games are hard to come across nowadays but a decade ago they were all the rage. I recently downloaded 'Beneath a Steel Sky' and had a great laugh playing it. I got the scummvm emulator and was able to hear the voices and sound which really makes the game  .
Other games like amstrad/spectrum classics like Batman and Head over Heels should be played by all avid gamers. A lot of the younger users probably don't know many old games but they are really missing out on some classics.
I would post a link for old games but they are abandonware so if you want it just PM me. You probably may have come across the site. :)

I don't know if I have an opinion on what the best game was, ever, but the best system, to me is a toss-up between the snes and the playstations. One of my favorite games is from SNES and it's called BomberMan. You can blow your opponents up and you have to be last one standing. Has puzzle mode, and competition mode.
Bomberman was one of my favourites, I had it on my Amiga 500 with a joystick adaptor which allowed 4 joysticks. We spent many hours playing this game with 5 of us(1 on keyboard) which makes it a lot of fun. That was about the time SNES was around I think.

Probably so. I don't know what it's like playing 4, let alone 5 players, but I do know playing with 2, and that was fun, so I can only imagine how much more fun it would have been with 4 or 5 people playing, all shouting and laughing at each others misfortunes. :D

Yeah, but the old games were very good, had a style all their own, even if the graphics weren't the best. At least that's my opinion.

I am one of those who loves RPGs and the first ones I played were on the SNES. Still haven't found any other console that has RPGs with the depth and storylines that the SNES did/does (ours still works and we still have and play about 10 RPGs).
One example, I originally played Zelda - A Link to the Past on the SNES. Years later I played Zelda - Ocarina of Time on my brothers N64. While the newer game was fun and I enjoyed it, I was disappointed that it was much shorter and didn't seem to have the same intense level of gameplay that its older version did. It seemed the later games graphics and special effects were more important to the makers than the gameplay and storyline.

There were some PS1 games that were alright (can't think of any right now there are) but the N64 was JUNK. It was the biggest piece of garbage. Now the NES come on now double dragon beats all.

Nintendo 64 is awesome! I am consistently amazed at how bad some of the newer games can be despite improvements in graphics, experience, etc. The old Zelda games, along with super smash bros, are just amazing. My favorite computer game is technically also a classic. Starcraft. Way ahead of its time, and better than most games around today.
