View Full Version : Geography Quiz

Right, so instead of just connecting geographic locations with each other, let's try something a bit more... challenging.

The idea's this: a poster describes a country in his post, and the people after him/her try guessing/knowing which nation the description was about. The original poster then tells if the answer was correct, and the person with the right answer gets to describe the next nation.

For example:

Person 1:
This nation gained its independence in 1917, after which it was the battlefield for a civil war for a year before the so-called 'white' side beat the opposing 'reds'. Its flag has only two colours, blue and white.

Person 2: That's Finland, isn't it?

Person 1: Correct, Person 2; your turn.

etc...

So, I'll describe a nation. Something easy to begin with. ;)

The flag of this European nation contains three colours, which I won't name here. The official language of this country is not spoken too widely worldwide as most speakers live either in this country or in its neighbours. This nation's football team (or its predecessor) has won multiple football World Cups.

Arkacia

That discribes half of Europe :D....but at a guess, Italy?

Mantzaros
03-17-2005, 06:41 AM
Well crap, alright. My description does indeed cover a couple of countries, and since I cannot say Italy doesn't meet the requirements, I'll accept it. I was looking for Germany with its 'predecessor' West Germany being the football masters, but meh. Your turn, Arkacia.

(One thing though: I'd NEVER mention Italians' World Cup success, NEVER I would. )

alright, dragon gave me her turn, so .. . . . . . .

this country was a country for a short period between the end of the 19th cnetury and 1949, when they joined a klarger country in existance since about the turn of the century.
that gives it away!

Mantzaros
03-18-2005, 08:03 AM
East Germany, perhaps? DDR was established in 1949 and in the turn of 1980s-90s along with the German re-unification, it ceased of existance.

If you meant this 'end of the century' to have happened earlier than 1949, you might have wanted to call it "the end of the 19th century". ^^;

edit: I've spent one hour pondering this, and cannot come up with a country meeting all the requirements. -_-' I'll keep on thinking till someone grabs the prize.

Arkacia

Freakums, the discription you give is a bit confusing, but one "nation" did come to mind, if I've read things right :).

Tibet?

India

This country was formed in 1945 as a republic, and then fell apart in 1992. American pressure in 1995 split one of the former reigions in this former republic into two nations, and in 2005 this "nation" has finally disappeared from the map of Europe.

Simple...

Arkacia
03-24-2005, 06:55 AM
I think considering the nature of this game, and the hard nature of some of the clues, we all should wait to have our answer confirmed as correct, before putting the next question in :).

India is'nt the answer Freakums is looking for, as it never joined a larger country, and lost its independance.

However, Newfoundland and Labrador did, when they joined Canada in 1949, and if this is the right answer, I'm going to kick myself hard for not guessing it first. Considering where Freakums is from :D.

If I'm right, HinesDaMan's question can stand as the next one.

Freakums

Ok, I'm going to assume I'm right, because the question asker has'nt posted anything.

What nation was the first in the world to give women the vote?

Mantzaros
03-28-2005, 03:35 AM
New Zealand, I seem to recall. Year I don't remember, though.

Arkacia
03-28-2005, 04:20 AM
yep, your turn :).

Mantzaros
03-30-2005, 09:04 AM
This nation consists of two fairly different parts and its flag is originally a combination of the two flags of these regions. The capital of this nation is often mistakenly mentioned to be the largest city (port city) of this nation, even though the actual legislative (and official) capital has been located elsewhere for decades already.

supermario
03-30-2005, 04:13 PM
Is it Australia??? I have this feeling I'm wrong, but I couldn't pass up the Sydney/Canberra connection...

Mantzaros
03-30-2005, 11:54 PM
Not bad a guess, but nope, it's not Australia. If this seems difficult to more people, I'll post some more hints later.

Arkacia
03-31-2005, 02:49 AM
I'm probably wrong too, but the only other nation I can think of that gets its capital mixed up is Brazil. Don't think it fits the other clues though.

Mantzaros
03-31-2005, 10:59 AM
Not Brazil either. Alright, so a clue: one of the aforementioned two parts of this nation is an island traditionally wealthier than the continental region.

Arkacia
04-01-2005, 05:21 AM
By George I think I've got it :D.

The island clue made me think of Zanzibar, and on checking up, found that Tanzania fits all your clues...so my answer is

Tanzania.

Mantzaros
04-06-2005, 02:06 AM
Err... I must say I don't have any kind of reasonable clue on this one. Could you give some more clues for non-Americans?

EDIT: Ding, I immediately came up with something ridiculous! Well, I guess I'm just doing some blind shooting, but could it be in California? Golden question, Golden Gate, that's the only "golden" thingie I remember of the top of my head knowing also its location within the States...

EDIT2: Somehow I don't trust my answer above.

supermario
04-06-2005, 01:19 PM
That is correct! San Francisco, at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge... very nice seeing my clue... :p

A side note, Fort Baker was the end point for the Amazing Race 2 a couple of years ago.

All yours Mantzaros...

Mantzaros
04-11-2005, 04:55 AM
The nation I'm looking for has a very colourful flag, due to political reasons mostly. In order to emphasize the new equality between every political and social faction within this nation, the flag was changed somewhere just before the middle of 1990s. The flag contains and combines the party flags found in this nation, and also symbolizes the "former division, but future unity" between the social groups. Oh yes, and this country is one of the wealthiest of its continent, no matter how major social problems they actually have.

Hope it's somehow understandable. ^^;

Mick
04-11-2005, 05:27 AM
Would that be South Africa? I seem to remember a flag change when Nelson Mandela came to power and ended apartheid around the mid '90s....

Yes New Caledonia!!!......your turn..

Arkacia
04-18-2005, 08:40 PM
These islands have been under disputed ownership for over 200 years. An attempted invasion was repelled in the second half of last century. The main industries are farming and fishing.

Mantzaros
04-19-2005, 06:39 AM
(Yikes, the New Caledonia one was really difficult... it only first popped into my mind after reading Arkacia's answer. :D)

This one, however, might be easier... Falkland Islands in South Atlantic? Argentina and the United Kingdom haven't really reached an agreement since the first half of 19th century on these islands, and the shortish "invasion" by Argentinians was quickly countered by Thatcher and company of the UK somewhere in the beginning of the 1980s... 1981, 1982 or something.

Arkacia
04-19-2005, 07:52 AM
Yes, you are right. It is the Falklands :).

Darn, I'd hoped this on was going to be a bit hard to work out.
Oh well, maybe next time :D.

Mantzaros
04-26-2005, 03:38 AM
Alright, sorry for the delay; I sort of forgot and err... right.

Anyway, the country I'm looking for gained its independence and became an empire in the first half of the 19th century but only got to have two emperors before turning into a republic in turn of 1880s and 1890s. In the mid-20th century this nation seemed like it could've theoretically become a southern hemisphere "Scandinavian social democracy paradise" (or at least potentially postpone the current social problems further) with its huge public income and resources, but one certain and certainly more than questionable construction project turned everything upside down. This construction project was the new capital, by the way.

I hope it's not too confusing; I'm running a nice little fever, so my concentration is a bit shaking.

Arkacia
04-27-2005, 07:04 PM
Is it Brazil?

It sort of seems to fit the clues. At least what I can remember reading about Brazil's history ages ago does :).

Mantzaros

The official language of the country is Latin, but there are many more languages spoken there.

Toronto:
@17,000,000,000 in proceeds from movies(growth since that, 10.78%)
that's not including merchandise, and that's not inclusding the rest of the states ro ther rest of Canada. The rest of Canada followws similar statistics over the U.S.

Is the answer the Vatican HinesDaMan?

Freakums, I wasn't talking about profits but sheer numbers of movies made. Bollywood movies don't make as much money as other countries because they aren't exported like those from North America. It doesn't help that most Indian movies are pretty crappy and most western audiences aren't really interested in them.

HinesDaMan
05-12-2005, 06:23 PM
Yep Ark, it is the Vatican. Technically every Catholic in the world is a citizen of the Vatican, which is how 1 billion people worldwide are citizens there.

Sorry I forgot all about this game :D.

I'll just put an easy one in.

This nation was a great explorer in its past and is responsible for the language most commonly spoken in South America. It was also responsible for the destruction of at least two ancient societies due to lust for gold, slaves, land and forced religious conversions in the 15th and 16th century. Today however it has just passed laws allowing gay marriage.

Two political coups in 1987 caused beacause of anger over the Indian community dominating the government disrupted this country's machine, but it has since recovered and had free elections in 1999. Later elections in 2001 provided this country with a democratically elected government.

Malawi in the south-eastern part of the African continent. Neighbours are Tanzania, Mozambik and Sambia, if I'm not mistaken. Unfortunately, that's about all I know about the small country.

Arkacia

Your right Mantzaros..very good Detective work..

Knows how she did it too...hehehehe..

Mantzaros
08-04-2005, 04:04 AM
Alright, let's stick to the flags for now. ^_^ The easiest way to find this flag is from sports competition.

Arkacia
08-07-2005, 02:42 AM
Starts muttering under breath....I'm not going to cheat and look it up, I'm not going to cheat and look it up, I'm not going to cheat and look it up

Ok, I'll have a complete guess, is it the Danish olympic flag?

Mantzaros
08-07-2005, 01:25 PM
Hehe, not a Danish flag, Arkacia. I'll add that this "country" is not independent, but a rather problematic area belonging to the United Kingdom.

Arkacia
08-07-2005, 03:13 PM
Hmm, Northern Ireland?

yarnellcg17
08-07-2005, 06:10 PM
:D 2nds the motion in the answer that it is Northern Ireland:D

Mantzaros
08-08-2005, 06:50 AM
Yes, that's the Ulster's Banner. Northern Ireland it is.

Your turn again, Arkacia. ^_^

Arkacia
08-08-2005, 05:42 PM
I've tried to be a bit tricky here. Hope this one is a bit harder to guess :).

JsWoman
08-08-2005, 07:19 PM
I'm going to have a try at the flag. I will guess it's

Northern Territory, Australia

Arkacia
08-08-2005, 08:09 PM
Dang, wasn't as tricky as I thought it would be :D.

Yes you are right, you're turn now.

JsWoman
08-08-2005, 10:59 PM
Hoping this is a good one to try.

Arkacia
08-11-2005, 06:40 AM
Ok, another guess.

The colours look Portugese, so Portugal?

JsWoman
08-11-2005, 07:59 AM
Ok.. So it wasn't the hardest one to go up, but it was worth a shot. :D Good job, Arkacia.

Arkacia
08-11-2005, 02:30 PM
The reason I was able to guess that one is because on another site I visit, people can use a flag to represent where they live. The site concerned has a few Portugese members so I see their flag in threads a fair bit :).

Ok, next one....

yarnellcg17
08-11-2005, 03:04 PM
An African Nation named Burundi

Here is mine

Mantzaros
08-11-2005, 03:17 PM
Washington DC. The family coat of arms of George Washington. No, I didn't know it right away. ^^;

(The earlier country is spelled Burundi, but I'm sure that was just a typo. :D)

yarnellcg17
08-11-2005, 03:45 PM
You're right on both answer and typo Mantzaros..wanna trade keyboards?:D

Mantzaros
08-12-2005, 06:25 AM
Trading keyboards, eh? Aww, shucks... I like this current one of mine so much; many years together and such... ^^;

Flags, flags, flags... another flag. ^_^

edit: aww, shucks... this cannot be this hard. I included now the former flag as well in case it'd help a bit.

Arkacia
08-16-2005, 07:43 AM
Ok, I admit it. This was a hard one and the old flag didn't help me one bit, but cheating and looking through a flags site did :D.

It belongs to Georgia, a former soviet republic.

Mantzaros
08-16-2005, 08:49 AM
Alrightie, Arkacia. ^_^

The turn is yours again. :D

Arkacia
08-17-2005, 04:15 AM
I chose this one because I thought it looked pretty :).

yarnellcg17
08-17-2005, 07:52 AM
My answer for Arkacia's is

Belize

Mantzaros had a very very hard 1 on that old Georgia flag ( former Soviet Republic )
Here is mine..

Arkacia
08-25-2005, 05:44 AM
I've just done a big search through world and American flags and can't find this one. You've stumped me yarnell :D.

Would you consider putting a clue in.....please :)

yarnellcg17
08-25-2005, 08:36 AM
It's just a newer flag of a Former Soviet Republic :D

Arkacia
09-05-2005, 05:28 AM
Ok, I'll give it a guess, how about...ummm.....Armenia?

Mantzaros
09-05-2005, 06:13 AM
It's the former flag of Georgia, the same I posted just a few days before the current one. In my post from three weeks ago, I attached eventually two flags with it. The five-cross flag is the new flag, while this one in question is the old flag replaced perhaps in 2002 or so.

yarnellcg17
09-05-2005, 11:47 AM
Oh ok.. I thought it was the new 02 flag :D

But when your right about Georgia being the answer..it just has to be good:D

Your right Mantzaros.. Your next :D

Mantzaros
09-06-2005, 01:44 AM
Alright, let us get out of the former Soviet Union for now... :D

Now, this flag is not in use anymore. The country I'm looking for has been a republic twice in its lifetime, but both times for a very short period. This flag is from the second republican era. The coat of arms in the middle might make it easier to recognize. Ah yes, and nowadays this country is a kingdom.

yarnellcg17
09-08-2005, 02:09 AM
Hmmmm..after very hard looking ..I see that Andorra has a similiar coat of arms in their flag..so I will shoot for Andorra :D

Mantzaros
09-08-2005, 11:02 AM
Sorry, not Andorra. I see perfectly well why you went for Andorra, though, yarnellcg17. :) With which country does Andorra have extremely similar coat of arms?

Mantzaros
09-13-2005, 11:29 AM
Aww, shucks. I feel devastated being forced to double-post, but this flag seems to have got you all silent, no matter how close the first try was. *wipes tears*

Well, here's the current flag of the country. Not too difficult now, eh? :D

JsWoman
09-13-2005, 12:08 PM
I think I found that, and think it's Spain.. Am I right?? I don't do very well with flags, usually.

yarnellcg17
09-14-2005, 12:08 AM
I second the motion that it is Spain.. Sorry Mantzaros on the one ya did before this new one..that one was a tough one to try and put together for an answer.. good stumping:D

JsWoman
09-14-2005, 10:58 AM
I'm glad you agree with me, Yarnell, but I'll wait to make sure the quizzmaster agrees before I go and find a flag.

Mantzaros
09-15-2005, 10:51 AM
Aye, Spain it is. I must admit the old republican flag isn't widely-known, so it was a lot more difficult. Good work on this one, though. :)

JsWoman, the catwalk's yours. :D

JsWoman
09-16-2005, 07:58 AM
Ok, it's my turn, then, so here goes...

Mantzaros
09-17-2005, 04:22 AM
Even though my field of "expertise" isn't in non-national flags, the general composure of this flag gave out its nature. Definitely a Brazilian state flag.

Browsing a South American flag database gave me the answer: Santa Catarina.

yarnellcg17
09-17-2005, 04:35 AM
Santa Catarina a state in the country of Brazil
is what I seen as well to be the answer..

JsWoman
09-19-2005, 02:24 PM
You're right, Mantzaros. Your turn.

Mantzaros
09-20-2005, 11:02 AM
Hee, alright... for once, I'll come up with a simple question and not a flag... :D

In which country can you find a village called Jerusalemi?

I'll come up with a flag next time again. ^_^

yarnellcg17
09-20-2005, 03:51 PM
In Finland I find a village called Jerusalemi

Mantzaros
09-21-2005, 02:25 AM
Hehe, that's correct. Your turn. :D

yarnellcg17
09-21-2005, 08:11 AM
Here is something a bit different..just have to guess what country I am:D

JsWoman
09-21-2005, 10:56 AM
Looks like Germany, to me.. And, do I have to do a blank map, too, for my turn, or what??

yarnellcg17
09-21-2005, 11:06 AM
Germany is the correct answer Js..:D

Will see what ya come up with :D

JsWoman
09-21-2005, 11:07 AM
Hmmm.. a little birdy, who can't guess, now, showed me where to get the outlines of countries.

09-21-2005, 11:20 AM
Switzerland, definitely. ^_^

JsWoman
09-21-2005, 11:27 AM
Yup, you're definately correct. Your turn.

Mantzaros
09-25-2005, 05:53 AM
Sorry for the delay... ^^;

I like flags more than anything else in geography, so here I go: another flag. ^_^

yarnellcg17
09-25-2005, 01:09 PM
Burma :D

Is my answer for this flag

Mantzaros
09-26-2005, 02:59 AM
Aye, you're right. Myanmar is the Burmese name for the country, but I prefer Burma myself as well. ;)

Your turn, yarnellcg17. ^_^

JsWoman
09-26-2005, 01:17 PM
Congrats on the getting the right one, Yarnell. Wonder what you're gonna put up this time.

yarnellcg17
09-26-2005, 01:41 PM
Thank You Js an Mantzaros :D

Here are 2 that I am going to put up...

Mantzaros
10-02-2005, 06:11 AM
I cannot be 100% sure about these, but I'd say they have something to do with boy/girl scouts. It's that knot in the rope in the upper flag which brought that into my mind. ^^; I'm almost sure they're not national/regional flags of any kind.

yarnellcg17
10-02-2005, 08:59 AM
You are correct Mantzaros on it being boy/girls scouts flag :D

They are world organizational flags..Your turn :D

Mantzaros
10-05-2005, 12:21 PM
Let's see how difficult this one proves to be... ^_^

So, here you go, another flag!

JsWoman
10-06-2005, 10:57 AM
The first one I came across that was similar to this was Iceland, then I kept looking and found the real one..

Aaland Islands (Finland)

Make sure I'm right before I post a new one up.

Mantzaros
10-06-2005, 11:51 PM
Aye, you're right, JsWoman. ^_^

The Finnish name for this Swedish-speaking region is Ahvenanmaa, and the Swedish name for it is Åland. Internationally known as Aaland Islands, just like you said.

Your turn. ^_^

edit: Ah yes, an excellent rule of thumb is to remember that all Nordic countries have a cross flag. Originally adopted in Denmark hundreds and hundreds of years ago, different variations are now in use also in Sweden, Iceland, Norway and Finland (the Aaland Islands flag is identical to the Swedish one with just a thinner red cross added inside the yellow one).

JsWoman
10-07-2005, 09:09 AM

yarnellcg17

Your Right Js..Massachusetts is correct :D

yeah.. next one I will find it will be from an island we never knew about :D

JsWoman

San Andres and Providencia Department (Columbia) :D

And it must have been difficult if it took you 2 days. :D :D

yarnellcg17
10-10-2005, 09:52 AM

I'm going to resurrect this thread. Next flag for guessing is....

Mantzaros
11-13-2005, 03:46 AM
Queensland, no question about that. ^^;

Arkacia
11-13-2005, 01:36 PM
Yes, you're exactly right.

Your turn now :).

Mantzaros
11-14-2005, 09:55 AM
Another flag. ^_^

JsWoman
11-14-2005, 12:51 PM
Yarnell and I were racing each other trying to see who could find this flag first, and it looks like I did it. :D:D My answer is Hong Kong. What say you Mantzaros?

Mantzaros
11-15-2005, 03:59 AM
Why of course, Hong Kong it is. ^_^

Your turn, JsWoman. :)

JsWoman
11-15-2005, 04:20 PM
Hmm... So it's my turn.. Let's try this one. :)

http://www.fotw.net//images/r/ru-nvsns.gif

Mantzaros
11-23-2005, 03:43 AM
I guess no one else wants to try...

I must say that I didn't know this right away, and the diagonal sky-blue wave gave me the impression this flag could be one of some microscopical, unindependent Oceanian island I wasn't aware of. However, further investigation changed my mind: the colours of green and white are the colours of Siberia. Green's traditionally been thought to symbolise the nature and white the snow, but the blue wave was a mystery. Well, after locating this flag, indeed in Siberia, it cleared out: the river Ob, that's the blue belt!

So, the flag is the one of the City of Novosibirsk, in Russia. Bloody tricky one, I must say; I'm not too familiar with the Russian subdivisions. ^^;

Arkacia
01-20-2006, 02:20 PM
As no-one has answered this thread for bloody ages Mantzaros, I think you can consider you got it right and put in the next one if you want :).
