Micks new thread on ghosts, has inspired me to start a thread on urban myths. These are stories that have been passed around high schools all over the world for decades, and that someone will swear are true, but really have no basis in fact.
Just wondering what your favorite urban myths are, the babysitter perhaps, bloody mary, or maybe the psycho in the backseat? :D.
Mine is the story of the teenage couple, (17 - 19 years old, it varies), who went out on a date, and on the way home, their car either breaks down, runs out of petrol, or gets a flat tyre. Of course this happens in an isolated spot, with no people or buildings anywhere nearby.
The boy tells the girl, he is going to go and find help, or a phone, and tells the girl to lock the doors of the car, and stay put until he comes back. She does as he says, and waits.
After a long period of time, she starts to hear strange noises around the car, as if someone is trying to open the doors etc. This scares her so badly she huddles on the floor in the dark and tries to make it look as if there is no-one inside. After a while, she hears sounds as if someone is climbing onto the roof of the car, then things go quiet.
A short while later, she sees the headlights of another car coming up behind her car. A voice through a loudspeaker tells her they are the police, and to unlock the car door, get out of the car, and walk straight back to them, without looking in any direction, except at the police car headlights. She does as they say, except just as she is about to reach the police car, she cant' help herself, and looks back at her car. The sight she sees sends her insane. A huge, ugly man is sitting on the roof of her car, holding her dead boyfriends head in his hands.
What the two teens did'nt realise, was that they had broken down not far from a hospital for the criminally insane, and one of the inmates had escaped earlier that night. The police, who stumbled over their car, were out looking for him.
There are many variations of this story, and it has been set in many different countries. I first heard it when I was about 15, and it scared the heck out of me at the time.
