View Full Version : Why call it a WORLD series.

This has been a bit of a sore point with me for years. Why do sports claim they are playing a world series, when most of the world are'nt involved. The Americans with the Baseball, Australians and others with the cricket etc. In my opinion, a true world series, of any sport, would involve teams from all over the world, not just a couple or few countries.

Wondering what the rest of you think about this.

I think the term WORLD SERIES is used as a general term to say competing teams are from different parts of the world. The closest we come to a real world series is the Olympics, I dont know whether every country in the world is represented there either.

Well, that really adds something interesting to the thread .

Was tempted to delete it, but have decided to leave it as an example to new users what useless spam looks like .

they probaly call it the world series because they want to get attention. it sounds better the "United States series" or the 'Australian series", doesn't it?

Well, the Americans are'nt in the World series cricket, so that is'nt much of an explaination. This term is used all over the world for various localized sporting events, and as psikid said, its probably just to make the event seem more important, and generate attention and publicity. The point I was trying to make though, don't others think it is very false advertising to say a sport is a WORLD series of whatever, when most of the world are'nt even interested, let alone involved.

blah blah blah...i say let em call it whatever they want...why do i care...

Edit If a thread does'nt interest you, don't post in it. This kind of post is spam and would usually be deleted, but you struck me in a good mood. No more posts like this please.

It's jsut a name. They don't sell walls at wall-mart. Not all words are composed of real meaning like Water-fall.

Actually "Wal-Mart" is named for the Waltons (the founding family).

I personally feel that they could coin the term 'National Championships'. That way it would stay true to it's meaning and still sound important... but I'm sure that by this point in time, it already would violate a copyright... soo... hmm... I guess I'm stumped on this one...

I would tbinkl they should call such series inmternational series. after all, that doesn;t imply the world is involved, just that it isn;t limited to one country. and you can find many such named series, really. it is (for the most part) onlt the hyped up mega-popualr sports that seem to be named world series.
then agian, i fdon;t know much abnout the spiorts world. I am an anti-fan of sports, because I believe it encourages violence. like gladiating encourages war. "lets off excess steam" . . .. yeah, right. look at the romansd and gladiating, many of ther emperors were pressed by the people and soldiers fopr war, partly due to the arena, partly because they wanted more slaves because they sent all theirs to die in the arena.
but thats gettign off topic.
i might note thatr there are also soem series which call themsel;ves world series because ythey are open to the world, such as the world curling championships. it is merely that the world choses not to, or cannot compete. meanwhile, the american baseball "world" series is only opne to a few countries, i believe .. . . .
